Congress President Sonia Gandhi has pulled up the central government for slow implementation of the UPA's 20-point programme, sources in the government say. |
As a result, Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes and Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation G K Vasan will meet state officials on February 14 to review the performance of various schemes under the programme. |
According to sources in the statistics ministry, the performance of the 20-point programme during April-November 2006 has been "very good" for nine programmes, "good" for five and "poor" for four programmes. |
Andhra Pradesh has replaced Uttarakhand as the number one state in implementing the programme during April-November 2006, while Delhi has slipped to the fifth place from the second position that it held during April-June 2006. |
Chhattisgarh and Gujarat have climbed to fourth and sixth positions, respectively, from 12 and nine in April-June 2006. |
During the period, states did well in installation of pumpsets, with a success rate of 473 per cent. They installed 2.13 lakh pumpsets, much above the target of 44,947. The government plans to install 3.8 lakh pumpsets in 2006-07. Setting up of community health centres, assistance to scheduled tribe families and improvement in slums followed. |
Schemes such as rural electrification, Indira Aawas Yojana, houses for economically weaker sections and primary health centres were areas of concern with the performance of states falling below 80 per cent. The states' success rate under these schemes was 78 per cent, 74 per cent, 71 per cent and 52 per cent, respectively. |
State governments cumulatively electrified 1,181 villages under the rural electrification programme, much below the target of 1,517 villages. |
Under the Indira Aawas Yojna, only 5.32 lakh houses have been built, as against the target of 7.15 lakh for the first eight months. |
However, state-wise data was not available for the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana. The Central government has, however, claimed that 24.90 crore mandays of employment has been generated during the April-November 2006 period. |
