The Centre has allotted Rs 17 crore for upgrading five tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh. Of this, approximately Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for temple town Ujjain. The rest will be invested in Orchha, Tamia, Shivpuri and Sanchi.

However, the world heritage site Bhim Baithika has been ignored under the plan. Bhim Baithika, known for its stone age cave paintings, does not even have the facility of safe drinking water.

As a result, most of the tourists skip the destination during summers and the tourist flow increases only during winters.

"We receive a maximum of 25 visitors each day at this important place where cave paintings narrate the story of ancient era. The state government does not take much interest in developing the tourist destination," said a source in the Archaeological Survey of India department.

Sanchi is also isolated despite being an important Buddhist tourist destination. An outlay of Rs 4.63 crore as part of the upgrade will definitely spruce up the tourist spot, a government spokesperson said.

Similarly, Orchha receives guests from all over the world but inadequate governance make it an unsafe destination. "During the last few years we have witnessed low tourist arrival due to a poor law and order situation," local MLA Brijendra Singh Rathore told Business Standard.

"The town which is famous for the temple of Lord Rama, who once visited the place, also has river-rafting facility and luxurious accommodation. But an air-strip can add more value to the destination," he added.

In fact, Ujjain has also been ignored for its once-famous observatory which was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Raja Jaisingh of Jaipur in 1719 when he was in Ujjain as the Governor of Malwa under the reign of King Muhammad Shah of Delhi.

The observatory receives hardly any visitor now. "An interpretation centre and a planetarium have also been planned under the project and approximately Rs 60 lakh will be invested in the upgrade of the observatory," said the government spokesperson.

Similarly, the Tamia site will also be developed with an investment of Rs 3.35 crore.
