The Centre today eased the norms for import of certain types of used goods required for the Commonwealth Games (CWG), but on the condition that the items would have to re-exported after the mega-sporting event.

The exemption from Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) import authorisation would only be applicable to the Organising Committee of the CWG and importers certified by it.

They can now import second-hand air conditioners, tents, building material, fencing, tractors for turf-laying and diesel generator sets and other items without restrictions.

"However, all such (used) goods imported by OC CWG and certified importers will be re-exported within three months after the Games," the DGFT said in a notification.

The permission to import such items comes with only 36 days left for the Games to start.

The government has also liberalised the norms for import of telecom equipment, except 'multichannel GSM/CDMA receivers, transmitters and transreceivers' and 'Thuraiya Satellite' phones, for the Games.

The import of second-hand goods, except capital goods, is restricted.

While there is no restriction on the import of most capital goods, an importer needs authorisation from the DGFT before importing items like air conditioners and diesel generators.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to kick off in New Delhi on October 3.
