The Centre has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the killings in Nithari village of Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

The committee has members from the Union home ministry, Ministry of Women and Child Development and the state government.

An order to this effect was issued by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development today.

The committee has been asked to look into the efforts made by the local administration, especially the police, to locate the missing children and provide assistance to the affected families. It would also go into the modus operandi and the motive of the accused persons behind the gruesome activities.

The panel, which has to submit its findings within a fortnight, is headed by Union Ministry of Women and Child Development Joint Secretary Manjula Krishnan, would also include Union Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary (Police) V N Gaur, Department of Women and Child Development, Uttar Pradesh, Secretary Balvinder Kumar and Union Ministry of Women and Child Development Director JS Kochher.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan was today hardpressed to answer as to why Sonia Gandhi had not issued a single statement when she had been regularly attacking UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in the past over lesser incidents.

Natarajan tried to defend Gandhi by saying that she had kept away from Nithari village because she did not want to "politicise" the issue.

On the other hand, the BJP got part of its act together on the incident with party general secretary Vinay Katiyar visiting the area today and demanding that a CBI probe be initiated over the issue.
