The Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM), the Paralakhemundi (Gajapati district) based private university, will set up a garment unit as a training-cum-production center.

The proposed unit will come up in a 15,000 sq. feet shed in the campus of Jagannath Institute of Technology and Management (JITM), an institute under CUTM, at Paralakhemundi.

The centre, with about 100 sewing machines, will have a capacity to produce 1500 shirts per day. It will impart training to at least 300 persons every month under the Central government sponsored Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, a self employment scheme, while another 100 persons will get employment in packing and other activities.

Initially, Rs one crore will be invested in the unit, which will start production in January next year, said the promoters of the Centurion Group, Mukti Mishra and DN Rao. The unit is being promoted under the brand name Gram Tarang.

“The unit is part of the group’s plans to increase training and placement opportunities among scheduled tribe and scheduled caste women, especially the school drop outs”, they said. The training curriculum would be developed in tune with the industry needs, they added

The group has already received assistance from National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for promoting employability related training. The training cum production center will have marketing contracts with well know Indian brands like Madura Coats and other companies.

The SGSY programme is being implemented by the Central government since April 1, 1999 with amalgamation of different schemes like Integrated Rural Development, Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA), Training for Rural Youth for Self-employment (TRYSEM), Million Well Schemes (MWS) etc.
