The second semester students of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) of Centre for Environment, Planning and Technology University (CEPT), Ahmedabad, are preparing city development plan for an Indonesian city in north Sumatra region.

Twenty-four students had been on a 12-day visit to Medan, a 256 sq km city in north Sumatra Islands, as part of their academic study tour to prepare a development plan.

"URP students will create city development plan for Medan, as part of their academic curriculum. This plan is being developed envisioning a 20 years time," Anjana Vyas, a faculty at CEPT told Business Standard.

Four groups comprising six students in each group, have been given different aspects of the plan.

These plans, however, has to be approved by a jury at CEPT before it is sent to Medan municipality authority.

"Students will focus on land management, developing tourism in Medan, mitigate urban flood and developing industrial area," she added.

Medan, with a population of 20 lakh, is the gateway to lake Toba, a major tourist attraction.

"We plan to develop Medan as a tourist centre. However, it has to be economically viable, get social acceptance and fall within the legal frameworks," she added.

The development plans will also take into consideration the flood problems of the city.

"Two rivers Deli and Babura passes through the city and therefore it is perennially prone to floods almost half the year. Another problem with the city is transportation, which will be taken into consideration while developing the plan," Vidyasagar Pancholi, a URP student said.

CEPT is also exploring the possibility of a tie-up with north Sumatra University for a long term understanding and exchange programmes.

Students of the Environment planning (EP) is also in the process of developing a special environment management plan for 40 km strip in Matara region in Sri Lanka. These students have visited the region as part of their study tour.
