The Gujarat Congress on Tuesday promised cheaper petrol, diesel, CNG and urea in the state if they are voted into power in the assembly elections scheduled later this year. This promise has been made in 'Gujarat People's Development Vision-2012' released by Congress leaders in run up to the polls. The vision has 12-points out of which the first and the most prominent is the high price of petrol, diesel and CNG in Gujarat compared to other states, owing to the higher rate of value added tax (VAT). However, the party declined to term the document as its election manifesto.
"If, in the assembly elections to be held in December this year, Congress is voted into power, we would decrease the rate of VAT on petrol, diesel, CNG, which would make it significantly cheaper and benefit the people of Gujarat," Congress president Arjun Modhvadida said. The VAT collected by the state government at present stands at 25 per cent on petrol, 24 per cent on diesel and 15 per cent on CNG.
