With the state receiving a good rainfall in last few days, about 64 per cent sowing has been completed for the kharif crop in Chhattisgarh.

The senior officials with the department of agriculture said that sowing for the kharif 2012-13 has been completed in 3.05 million hectare in the state. With this, sowing has been completed in about 64 per cent of the targeted area.

The total crop acreage is targeted at 4.77 million hectare as compared to last year’s 4.75 million hectare in 2012-13. The state government has set a target to sow paddy crop in 3.60 million hectare of area in kharif 2012-13 as against last year’s 3.61 million hectare.

The officials said that sowing for the paddy crop had been completed in 2.53 million hectare of area in the state that is about 70 per cent of the targeted area. The estimated rice production in the state is likely to be 6.48 million tonnes as against last year’s 6.36 million tonnes. In 2010, the state had produced 6.1 million tonnes of rice.

“The state is receiving good rainfall and 20 districts of the 27 in the state have so far received 80 per cent rainfall,” state’s agriculture minister Chandrashekhar Sahu said. Since the monsoon is active in the state, the other districts are also likely to record good rainfall in coming days, he added.

The state government has made all necessary arrangement to ensure sufficient supply of fertilizer and seeds to the farmers, the minister added.
