Chhattisgarh remains calm

Shops and business establishments across Raipur were closed soon after the Ayodhya verdict came today evening.

Traders feared unrest in the city after the verdict was pronounced, a senior office bearer of Chhattisgarh Chamber of Industry said. In fact, the bandh-like situation in the market was prevailing since the morning. Soon after the Allahabad High Court delivered the judgment, about 90 per cent of the shops and business establishment in the city were closed. Street wore a deserted look while people preferred to stay home fearing untoward incidents. Senior police officials said no untoward incident had been reported.

Police officials said that heavy deployment had been made at sensitive points in the city. Senior police officials were patrolling the city to keep a close watch on the situation. Section 144 had been promulgated prohibiting mobilisation of people at one point. Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh has appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquility.
