Finance minister P Chidambaram will arrive on a one-day visit to Mumbai, country's financial capital, tomorrow.

This will be his fourth visit to Mumbai after he assumed office as the finance minister of the country in May last year and first after the presentation of the Union Budget for 2005-06.

Bankers expect Chidambaram to make announcement on financial sector reforms. Chidambaram has been stressing the need for consolidation in banking industry through mergers and acquisitions.

Finance minister in his budget speech had announced the formation of an expert committee to advise the government on how to make Mumbai a regional financial centre. Chidambaram is expected to take stock of the working of this expert committee while in Mumbai, said banking sources.

As a part of his itinerary, the FM will meet the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chairman M Damodaran, Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) chairman N Balasubramanian, top brass at Reserve Bank of India and state finance secretaries.

He will attend an international convention on the securities market vision for development and regulation organised by Association of National Stock Exchange members of India.

Chidambaram will also inaugurate Sidbi's new SME (small and medium enterprises) Development Centre at Bandra-Kurla Complex.

The finance minister is also expected to attend the Bank of India (BOI) management committee meeting in the afternoon.

"We have invited the finance minister to the bank as he would be attending a function at SIDBI," said senior Bank of India officials.
