The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) today organised Quality Control Circle Preliminary Competition (QCCPC) in Uttaranchal for the first time, at BHEL, Haridwar, to sensitise the industry on issues of quality and providing them with appropriate tools, techniques and management processes to enhance the quality. |
S K Gupta, executive director of BHEL, Haridwar, while speaking as chief guest at the 19th QCCPC 2006 "� 2007, emphasised on the importance of small improvements in manufacturing processes and skill levels of the shop floor personnel. |

Gupta welcomed the CII initiative and stressed on taking cognisance of the Japanese approach of kaizens towards raising the overall quality of the products. |

He further mentioned that innovative skills and rich knowledge of working level people gave impetus to the Quality Circle within the organisation |

Twelve Quality Circle teams from eight organisations comprising of workmen gave presentations on the specific projects handled by them at their work place. |
|
The assessment of the presentation was made on a weighted scale covering different aspects of the Quality Circle activity. The evaluation depended upon factors like problem selection, analysis, solution, presentation, etc. The winners of the preliminary round will compete at the regional finals. |

The panel of judges includes B N Saxena, management consultant, Haridwar, Anil Patil, factory head, Havell's India Ltd, Haridwar and Sudhir Chandra, management consultant, Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Haridwar. |

Uttaranchal State Council Vice Chairperson J C Jain, while inaugurating the programme, said the competition would provide a unique opportunity to motivate workers to form Quality Circles within the company and also provided them with an opportunity to exchange ideas, views and share experiences on various approaches to problem solving through Quality Circles. |

"The objective of holding such a competition is to create awareness in the industry on maintaining the quality of its products and endeavour to improve it constantly," he added. |

Welcoming the chief guest, Lovelena Mody, Chairperson CII Uttaranchal State Council, mentioned that transformations taking place today in the world economic order offered great opportunities as well as challenges to the organisations and professionals working in the field of quality. |

The adoption of quality systems was a way of gearing up to meet these challenges, she said. She further mentioned that CII's Quality Circle Competitions were different in the sense that they involved considerable interface with people working at the shop floor. |

The objectives of quality circles were to enhance the quality of management in the organisation, to gain access to the problem-solving skills of the employees and to enhance job satisfaction and quality of work life, she added. |
