The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai zone, has commissioned a Traffic Study for upgrading Madurai airport to international airport and to revive the commercial operation of Tuticorin airport.

According to a CII press statement, the key objectives of the study would be to estimate the traffic potential of Madurai airport and Tuticorin airport for five, 10, 15 and 20 years under various heads such as tourists and business passengers, domestic and international passengers and air-cargo traffic.

It would also assess the possibility of converting Madurai airport into an international airport and reviving the commercial operations of Tuticorin airport.

CII Madurai has laid specific emphasis on tourism promotion in and around Madurai by way of attracting chartered flights into Madurai and also envisaging the growth of the international or national air traffic originating from Madurai hinterland.

The statement further said the CII study will also estimate the possibility of enhancing Madurai airport's revenue model by studying various non-traffic possibilities such as provision of maintenance facilities and overnight parking.

Based on the findings of the study, which is expected to be completed by mid-November 2005, the CII would urge the government to create infrastructure to facilitate airlines to operate international flights.
