Apart from India’s official delegation, some of the business houses in the country are also gearing up to be part of the global climate forum, Rio+20 Earth Summit, to start in Brazil later this month.
Stressing that businesses have a leading role to play in India’s transition into a green economy, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Global Compact Network in India (GCNI) are taking a delegation of Indian business leaders to the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum.
Business leaders from Indian companies like Infosys, ITC, Welspun Energy, Oil and Natural Gas Corp, NTPC and Tata Chemicals, among others, are going to take part in the event that marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
The delegation will not be part of the talks as the event, organised by the UN Global Compact ahead of the UN Conference on Environment and Development, is a forum where nations parley.
Besides, the CII-GCNI business team will meet with other business organisations to exchange views on making industry and businesses more environment-friendly.
Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, CII, said: “For India to implement its green growth plan, most solutions will come from business. CII strongly advocates its members to take leadership in green growth and urges the government to provide direction, keeping in mind national development priorities.”
