The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) was considering differential taxation for different regions of the city depending on their economic status and affluence, said Asok Bhattacharya, minister-in-charge, municipal affairs and urban development department of the West Bengal government.

The minister was speaking at the fourth national congress on surveying, valuation and land economy. He said, that such a system was already prevalent and Patna and a similar model was being considered by CMC for Kolkata.

Bhattacharya explained that this would imply different taxation for upmarket and downmarket zones of the city. This would lead to annual rental valuation according to municipal slabs for different areas.

Bhattacharya said that the tax collection in Kolkata was around Rs 130 crore as compared to Rs 1,200 crore in Mumbai.
