The Karnataka High court on Friday made it clear to the civic body that it wanted the city to be cleared of garbage within a week.
Hearing a PIL filed on the matter by advocate GR Mohan, a division bench, headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen, stated that if anybody was found interfering with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (city corporation) in clearing the garbage mess, he would be dealt with in accordance with law. It is the state government’s responsibility to ensure that BBMP clears the garbage within a week,the court observed.
The court then took on record the status report filed by the government in which it stated that seven landfills had been identified by the state for dumping of garbage of which two had been cleared by the Pollution Control Board.
The court then adjourned the matter to December 13 for further hearing. Earlier, the petitioner submitted that despite several interim orders passed by the court garbage had not been cleared and was being dumped in street corners despite segregation of wet waste by the citizens.
On November 22, the court had directed the government and the BBMP to submit a status report on steps taken to address garbage menace in the city within two weeks.
