Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar expressed confidence that Karnataka would get justice from the Supreme Court in Cauvery issue when the review petition comes up before the Apex court on Monday.
Speaking to Business Standard here on Sunday on his way to Belgaum Shettar said he would meet Karnataka’s counsel Fali Nariman on Monday morning at New Delhi and discuss the modalities to be followed while convincing the Supreme Court-which is expected to take up Karnataka’s petition on
Monday-about the ground realities in Cauvery basin.
The Chief Minister said he would be accompanied by minister for water resources Basavaraj Bommai, Law minister Sureshkumar, legal experts and team of technical experts.
“We will explain the situation to Fali Nariman and he in turn would apprise the Supreme Court of the situation in the Cauvery basin and appeal to the court to reconsider its earlier order directing Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water from Cauvery to Tamilandu,” he said. Shettar also expressed confidence that the team of experts from New Delhi which visited Cauvery basin would give the factual report to the Cauvery Regulatory Authority (CRA). Based on the report the CRA should reconsider its earlier direction and relieve Karnataka of the undue pressure,” Shettar said.
Reiterating that his government was committed to protecting the interests of Karnataka’s land and water, Shettar said the constitutional binding and respect for the SC compelled the state government to release water to Tamil Nadu and comply with the court’s order though Karnataka was not in a position to release the water.
“We have released water with a heavy heart” he said.
