The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) unveiled its first compressed natural gas (CNG) buses on Monday which will run between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. Chief minister Narendra Modi flagged off the buses at a function held at Gandhinagar bus depot.

India's largest automobile manufacturer Tata Motors has supplied the first lot of CNG buses to GSRTC.

Shyam Mani, vice-president (sales and marketing) of Tata Motors, said, "As the country's leading automobile manufacture, we are actively partnering with the industry, government and other related agencies to promote the use of environment friendly technologies."

At present, there are over 3,400 Tata CNG buses plying on Delhi and Mumbai roads, of which, 1,400 Tata CNG buses are with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Bombay Electric Suburban Transport (BEST). Tata Motors has also developed a wide range of CNG vehicles including Indica with CNG application and LCV-407 CNG vehicle for bus application.

The new CNG buses will be able to reduce the air pollution level in Ahmedabad as the city has been rated as the most polluted city in the country with the highest level of RSPM (respirable suspended particle matter) in residential areas.

The move is aimed at making public transportation CNG based.

The Supreme Court had observed that RSPM level in nine cities of the country, including Ahmedabad, was found to be alarmingly high. The state government constituted a task force in 2002 for effective control of air pollution in urban areas of the state under the chairmanship of state chief secretary.

A detailed study for assessing the feasibility report of replacing 150 diesel buses of GSRTC by new CNG buses was made and the project report on GSRTC CNG bus programme was prepared by Gujarat State Fuel Management Company, Gandhinagar.

CNG being an environment-friendly fuel will help in reducing damage caused to the ozone layer and these bus operations will help in saving foreign exchange.

CNG has higher thermal efficiency compared to diesel and its price does not fluctuate like petrol and diesel. The use of CNG will also help in eliminating pilferage since it is directly filled into cylinder at high pressure.
