Indian Coast Guard's (ICG) operation to neutralise oil spilled from sunk merchant navy vessel off Galle harbour, south of Sri Lanka, has shown results.

Two ICG ships have been deployed off-Galle harbour in response to a request from the Lankan government to watch pollution response operation following sinking of the ship, ICG said.

A 158-metre-long Bangaladesh-registered merchant ship MV Amarnath Shah had sunk during the early hours of September 8. The vessel, a general cargo carrier, carrying timber logs and pulses had also on-board 180 tonne of fuel which has spilled over the sea.

The Coast Guard, which is the nodal agency for prevention and control of pollution of sea, has been on its job since September 12. Two major ships with integral helicopter on it and a Dornier aircraft have been commissioned for the task which is co-ordinated from the Chennai station.

The oil spill has been spreading easterly in a width of 100 metres up to a radius of 4 nautical miles. Moreover, a fresh spill from the sunk vessel has also been located.

"Coastal areas are not under any threat", ICG said, adding that total neutralisation of the located slick is achieved by judicious application of oil spill dispersant.
