The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codissia) is set to create an engineering centre of excellence that would assist the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in improving their design capabilities.

Codissia is in talks with the IT major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in this regard. Earlier, an interaction meeting was held between officials from Codissia and TCS and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed shortly.

Speaking to Business Standard, J Balu, president, Codissia, said that the MoU will be signed in a fortnight's time and TCS would work with Codissia to create a network of design and contract manufacturing supplies to provide an end-to-end engineering proposition to global customers.

The exact location of the centre will either be in Codissia's international trade fair complex or elsewhere. The project cost and location of the centre will be decided after signing the MoU, according to Balu.

However, the entire cost for setting up the centre would be borne by TCS, which will create the enabling environment in terms of hardware, software and network connectivity at the centre. The IT major will present the proposition to its global customer base as a key element of its engineering services strategy.

All industries in the region, ranging from foundries to die moulding, would be benefited from this centre, he added.
