The Commonwealth Law Conference, the largest event relating to law world, will be held in the city from February 5. The conference, being held in India after four decades, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia will deliver the thematic address.
Commonwealth Law conference organising committee chairman and former attorney general Soli Sorabjee said the theme for the five-day event will be 'Rs Emerging economics and the rule of law: Challenges and Opportunities'. It will deliberate on constitutional and human rights law, corporation and commercial law, judicial independence and protection of human rights lawyers and contemporary legal topics. Sorabjee is also the president of Commonwealth Lawyers Association.
Among others, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhury, barrister from UK Lord Lester, Justice Sudarshan Reddy from Supreme Court of India and Sir Sidney Kentridge Q, a doyen of the English and South African Bars, will deliver keynote addresses. Commonwealth secretary-general Kamalesh Sharma will also address the conference.
“Service should be the motto of legal profession,” Sorabjee said. About 10 chief justices would participate. About 800 delegates will attend the event. Over 60 sessions will be held during the event.
