Concerned over the drought situation and the resultant price rise, the Congress brass, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, today deliberated on the issue, amid indications that a CWC meeting will be held next week to discuss the issue.
The meeting of the Congress Core Group also discussed “some political issues” which party sources did not mention.
The meeting came at a time when moves are on to advance the Assembly polls in Haryana, where the party is in power.
The Assembly elections for Maharashtra are also expected to be announced soon and the leadership has to decide the issue of alliance with NCP.
The signal so far, according to party sources, is that the alliance will continue.
With assembly elections in Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh also expected soon, Congress is concerned over price rise and its effects on electoral prospects.
AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi had recently asked the government to take steps to check the price line and make available essential commodities.
