The meeting at the official residence of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also comes ahead of Singh's meeting with President Pratibha Patil later in the evening.
The Congress Core Committee meeting is being attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party chief Sonia Gandhi, Union Ministers, Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony and Shivraj Patil, besides other senior leaders.
The top leaders are understood to have assessed the numbers it would get in the event of a vote of confidence in Lok Sabha.
The meeting is also understood to have discussed the likely date for convening a special session of Lok Sabha for floor test.
The President had last night asked Singh to meet her today after the Left parties withdrew support to the Congress- led coalition, making it a minority government.
