The opposition Congress on Friday turned down the state government's budget for the year 2012-13, saying it to be a disappointment.
"The state government offered very less in the budget, considering the past four years of excessive tax burden. The duty cut in electricity is not sufficient as the state levies highest electricity duty in the country. Also, there is no cut in VAT on petrol and diesel even as it is the highest in the country," said Shaktisinh Gohil, leader of opposition in Gujarat assembly.
Adding further Gohil stated that while other states charge electricity duty on per unit basis, the Gujarat government charges the electricity duty on Ad Valorem basis, due to which electricity duty increases as soon as there is an increase in the fuel prices. "In such a situation, Rs 200 crore relief for residential and educational institution category is a mockery of the consumers. Even at the reduced rates, the electricity continues to be costly in Gujarat over other states," he said.
