The Karnataka unit of Congress today staged protest demanding the state government to stop acquisition of 2,000 acres of “fertile land” from farmers for a proposed township near here.

The protesters alleged that the government, in the name of constructing the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project (BMICP), has been acquiring lands around Kengeri Hobli near here and transferring it to Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE).

State Congress president R V Deshpande, addressing the protesters, pointed out that the government, in an affidavit in the High Court in September last year, had stated that 475 acres of excess land has been given to NICE.

Some leaders, including leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council V S Ugrappa, were arrested when they marched towards the residence-cum-office of chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to submit a memorandum. They were later released, the police said. Yeddyurappa is away in his home town Shimoga.
