Corporate tax mop-up spurts 46%

State-level Collection touches Rs 2,407 crore in financial year 2004-05

The income-tax department witnessed an over 46 per cent rise in corporate tax collection in Gujarat at Rs 2,407 crore in 2004-05 against Rs 1,632 crore in the previous year.
 
Tax collection from individuals in the state also witnessed a 20.65 per cent rise at Rs 2,542 crore against Rs 2,107 crore in the previous year.
 
I-T officials here believe that their cumulative revenue collection in 2004-05 is the highest in the last nine years.
 
The total budget collection for the financial year 2004-2005 for the Gujarat region has increased to Rs 4,951 crore as compared with Rs 3,743 crore in the financial year 2003-2004, which is a 32.04 per cent rise.
 
"After nine years since financial year 1995-1996, for the first time we have achieved the set budget target in the financial year 2004-2005," said U P Singh, chief commissioner, I-T, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday.
 
Interestingly, Gujarat has witnessed a 26 per cent increase in the number of returns filed above Rs 10 lakh, the number of returns filed in the entire region above declared income of Rs 10 lakh is 8,040 for the financial year 2004-05 as compared with 6,385 for the financial year 2003-04.
 
Similarly, the total number of returns filed in the state has witnessed a six per cent increase to 2121290 in fiscal 2004-05 as compared with 2000283 in the previous fiscal.
 
The tax department plans to connect all the offices in Gujarat by December, 2005. At present offices at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Surat and Gandhinagar are connected with the national network.
 
All returns are being processed on computer, resulting in quicker processing and early issue of refunds.
 
On the information technology initiatives of the department, Singh said, "The department has made filing of e-TDS compulsory for corporate assessees from the last financial year. Even the government tax deductors have also to file e-TDS return through intermediaries from this financial year."
 
Searches were conducted in 20 groups during the year, while the department admitted concealment of Rs 75.36 crore and seizure of assets worth Rs 15.63 crore.
