The Supreme Court today issued contempt of court notices to leaders of six hawkers' unions of Mumbai for instigating their members to flout the court orders on vacating their trading sites. |
They had also allegedly attacked the municipal corporation officials who tried to implement the orders. |
A bench headed by Justice S N Variava directed the police commissioner to provide security to the corporation staff and ensure that hawkers didn't return to the prohibited sites after eviction. The police shall conduct daily regular patrols to ensure this on of the orders. |
The court had devised a scheme to resettle the hawkers who crowd the central city. Certain congested zones have been declared out of bound for them. |
Therefore, they moved the court for modification of the earlier orders. However, the court was not inclined to do so and found that the hawkers were flouting its orders. |
The court granted relief to cobblers who were allowed to continue at their sites. Similarly, disabled hawkers have been allowed to operated public call offices. No permanent structures will be allowed except in the case of disabled persons. |
