Cow slaughter now a non-bailable crime in Gujarat, attracts life term

Earlier, punishment for cow slaughter was 7 years in jail and Rs 50,000 fine

Cow slaughter will now attract life imprisonment in Gujarat after the state Assembly amended the cow protection law on Friday, reported news agency ANI. 

With this amendment, cow slaughter has also been made a non-bailable offence. 

Further, persons found to be transporting beef and other related crimes will be penalised with a Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000 fine, reports news channel India Today.

Earlier, under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 2011, those found guilty of slaughtering a cow or transporting beef were awarded seven-year sentences and a Rs 50,000-fine.
