Ending weeks of intense speculation over the fate of assembly, the emergency general body meeting of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) held here today passed a unanimous resolution in favour of early polls to the state assembly. |
The resolution, mooted by home minister and politburo member T Devender Goud, appealed to the public to give their mandate to the TDP which had been striving hard for peace and prosperity in the region. |
Earlier in the day, the crucial politburo meeting went over the draft resolution to be adopted, seeking a fresh mandate from people "for development versus naxal violence and the opportunistic policies of Congress." |
The state cabinet is now expected to meet in a day or two to formally recommend to the governor the dissolution of assembly. |
Addressing over 7000 party delegates who attended the general body meeting, TDP supremo Naidu spelt out the achievements of his government and set the tone for the early poll campaign. |
Striking an emotional chord of the gathering, Naidu, who survived a PWG bid on his life on Tirumala ghat road on October 1, made a frontal attack on the Naxalite violence and the "anti-development" of the Congress party. |
Important party leaders like Yerran Naidu exhorted the TDP representatives who came from across the state to expose the divisionary tactics of Telangana Rashtra Samithi as well. |
On the reasons for the TDP party to go in for snap polls in the state, the party sources observed that the failure of monsoons this year, preceded by drought, generated anti-establishment sentiment in the state till as recently as August. |
As such sentiment only recently subsided what with belated rainfall, the party thought it was the best time to seek the mandate. |
Coinciding with the situation was a sympathy wave aroused for the party leader in the wake of an aborted Naxalite attack on him. |
With the hydel resources going dry across the state, the party feared there may be backlash with the onset of summer. The anticipated poor supply of electricity for irrigation needs was also a reason for the party seeking to rush for early elections, they added. |
