Currency and high-tech trade are likely to dominate the proceedings of the 21st edition of the US and China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade that kicks off in Washington on Tuesday.
While the US delegation would be represented by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and the US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, the Chinese delegation would be led by Vice Premier Wang Qishan.
During the two-day meeting, American and Chinese officials will review progress made by over a dozen working groups covering a wide range of trade issues such as intellectual property rights, telecommunications, agriculture, medical devices and pharmaceuticals, and travel and tourism.
The US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will separately meet with Wang Qishan at the Treasury Department to continue their discussions on US-China economic relations and global economic policy.
"We are working hard with China on trade issues as well as the whole realm of bilateral issues that we have with China," the State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner said.
