Against the backdrop of controversies and complaints against special economic zones (SEZs), a delegation of MPs will soon be sent for a survey of some SEZs in the country. The decision was taken at the meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee on commerce and industry last night. The parliamentary consultative committee has decided to visit some SEZs in and around Chennai to start the process. They will talk to local government representatives, industrialists and the evicted people. "We want to reach an overall assessment of the ground reality of the working conditions in SEZs - where the government can improve its role, where private players should take more responsiblity.....," a member said.Commerce and Industries Minister Kamal Nath chaired the meeting yesterday. He asked officials to make arrangements as quickly as possible for the visit of the MPs. The delegation is scheduled to leave for Chennai next week, and has short-listed three/four multi-product SEZs for the visit.
