Delhi gets Rs 2,435.68 cr in General Budget

The national capital got a plan allocation of Rs 2,435.68 crore in the General Budget, a whopping jump of Rs 1,673 crore from the last year's revised estimate. The city's revised budget allocation was Rs 762.68 crore for the financial year 2008-09.  

The increased plan allocation from the Centre is expected to help the Delhi Government in completing various projects related to next year's Commonwealth Games.  

As part of the total allocation, the city got Rs 814 crore for projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), while Rs 315.82 crore has been proposed for providing basic services to the Urban poor.        

The total allocation also includes Rs 1129.82 crore given to the city under urban infrastructure development for small and medium towns.  

The Central assistance under plan allocation includes normal assistance as well as additional central assistance for specific programmes like Nutrition Programme for Adolescent Girls, JNNURM, National E-Governance Action Plan and Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojna.  

In addition, central assistance for Commonwealth Games infrastructure has also been provided to the city Government.

The additional central assistance for roads and bridges continues to be reflected under the Ministry of Road Transport and Development. 

The economic slowdown has affected the revenue collection of the Delhi Government which had reported a fall of Rs 1,300 crore in revenue in the financial year 2008-09.        

With an aim to expedite the projects related to the Commonwealth Games, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee also proposed to substantially enhance the allocations of the mega sporting event to Rs 3,472 crore.  Mukherjee proposed to increase the allocation from Rs 2,112 crore in the interim budget to Rs 3,472 crore for the Commonwealth Games.  

Facing fund crunch for several projects related to the prestigious event, the Delhi Government had requested the Centre to allocate more money.  

Delhi Government in its budget had earmarked Rs 2,105 crore for the financial year 2009-10 for projects related to the Games.
