The Delhi government has approached the petroleum ministry for allocation of 13.5 million cubic metres per day (mcmd) of natural gas from new gas discoveries for its proposed two gas-based power plants.

The petroleum ministry has been told that it would require 5.5 mcmd of gas for a 700 mw gas-based power plant at I P Station and 8 mcmd of gas for a 1,000 mw power project at Bawana.

In a communication to petroleum secretary B K Chaturvedi, principal secretary (power) of Delhi government Jagdish Sagar has said that in view of the increasing demand for power in Delhi, it is essential that the Capital has its own power stations. "At present, the load met in Delhi has touched about 3100 mw and by 2005, it is likely to exceed 4,000 mw."

Sagar says that Delhi power stations are only catering to around 10 per cent of the total requirement which is not sufficient to maintain voltage and stability in Delhi power system.

"It is necessary to install more power stations in Delhi but due to pollution problems and scarcity of land for ash dumping, it is not possible to install new coal-based power stations here. The only option is gas-based power stations," Sagar says.

He says that in the existing coal-based power plant at I P Station, as a replacement of unit No. 1, a gas-based power plant of 700 mw can be installed; and at Bawana a 1,000 mw gas-based power stations can be implemented subject to availability of gas.

"In view of the news about some new gas discoveries, we shall be grateful if the requirement of 5.5 mcmd of gas for the proposed 700 mw gas-based plant at I P Station and 8 mcmd of gas for 1,000 mw power project at Bawana is kept in view," Sagar has said.
