The Delhi Cabinet today gave its approval to purchase 3,125 new low-floor CNG buses, including 1,250 air conditioned buses, "at the earliest" as part of its plans to modernise road transport in the national capital.

"The Delhi Cabinet gave its final go-ahead for procurement of 1875 non-AC and 1250 AC low-floor CNG propelled buses," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters after the meeting.

Dikshit said 3,125 new buses would be procured at the earliest as the cabinet has given its final nod for this purpose.

With the addition of 1,875 non-AC and 1,250 AC low-floor CNG propelled buses in intra-city bus fleet of DTC, the service would substantially improve as far as availability of buses on different routes is concerned.

She said the process of augmentation of bus fleet of DTC would continue and 6,000 new buses would be added, which would facilitate phasing out of killer blue-line buses.

Apart from this, introduction of new buses would go a long way in providing a world-class public transport system in the capital-city.

The low-floor AC and Non-AC CNG buses have been plying on the capital roads for the last few months and the response has been extremely positive.
