India along with several countries yesterday insisted for a solid platform to reflect the concerns of all members in the Doha trade negotiations before rushing into the "horizontal" negotiating process to finalise the Doha parameters for cutting agriculture tariffs and subsidies and industrial tariffs next month. |
"If we are to move to the next phase of intensive negotiations, it is essential that we prepare a solid platform for meaningful horizontal engagement," Indian trade envoy Ambassador Ujal Singh Bhatia told the Doha trade negotiations committee. |
"This means we need complete texts that reflect the concerns and expectations of all members, not of a few," he said, suggesting there should be attempts to resolve all issues and not those that favour some three or four members at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). |
"This also means that we give ourselves enough time to broaden the areas of convergence and that we do not imprison ourselves through unrealistic timelines," India argued. |
