Relief for Bihar's flood victims is pouring in from as far as South Africa, with a prominent Indian-origin businessman, having roots in the state, launching a drive to raise funds.
Ranjith Ramnarain, whose forefathers came from Bihar as indentured labourer, launched a state Relief Campaign after holding a meeting at the Hindu Temple here last night.
"I have been in touch with the state government in Bihar and we want to do something to provide relief", Ramnarain, owner and CEO of a major transport company, said.
"We cannot send food or blankets. What we want to do is to raise funds and channel this through the local Indian Consul General to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. From there the money will be sent to help the people of Bihar. We are all devastated that millions of people lost their homes and are living in poverty. What we have seen on television news has really touched us and we want to do something", Ramnarain said, adding that he was confident of getting ordinary people and the business sector to contribute to the relief campaign.
