The government is expected to submit the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Policy notification  to the Supreme Court (SC) today. The matter is listed for hearing in the apex court, a source said.

Earlier in December the SC had deferred the hearing of the public interest litigation (PIL) after the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) informed the court that it has notified the policy on its website but is yet to issue a gazette notification.

The SC may review the terms and clauses of the policy today if the matter is taken up.

The policy caps the price of 348 essential medicines at the arithmetic average of all drugs in a segment with a minimum of 1% market share.

Though the move has been welcomed by most of the industry, patient groups and health activits feel the policy may increase prices of some key drugs.
