India Inc is seeing its cash registers ringing following orders related to the upcoming general and state elections.

Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL) has won an order to provide 2 lakh electronic voting machines (EVM) to the Election Commission (EC). This order is valued at approximately Rs 90 crore.

The ECIL plans to deliver 1 lakh EVMs before the end of February. The market for EVMs is estimated at 10 lakh. The company's principal competitor is Bharat Electronics Ltd.

The EVM is a microprocessor-based instrument which displays a maximum of 64 candidates. A voter has to cast his vote and an audio-visual signal confirms the selection.

Senior ECIL officials confirmed the order they had received from the EC. They pointed out that they are aggressively targeting new markets overseas. The EVMs from ECIL are made from indigenous technology.

With elections planned in various countries in Africa and Asia, ECIL is evaluating the customisation of its EVMs to meet the requirements of electoral commissions in other countries.

Apart from EVM, ECIL's product range includes thermal batteries, technical ceramics and radion communication, which have wide applications in civil aviation, defence, railways, steel and telecommunication industry.

The corporation's electronic toll collection system (ETC) which will be used by the Andhra Pradesh Transport Department and Rewa Toll Ways of Madhya Pradesh, will ensure transparency and efficiency, by electronically classifying the vehicle, capturing images of the vehicle, calculating and printing the toll amount.
