Egg prices shoot up 20 pc in Tamil Nadu

 Average daily production of eggs fell from 109.67 lakh eggs in August to 105.49 lakh eggs in November. Daily average production is expected to fall further and is forecast to touch as low as 98.44 lakh eggs in March 2004. The recent peak in egg production in the state was in September 2003, when average daily production touched 113 lakh eggs.

 National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) officials said the increase in price and fall in production had been due to farmers cutting on replacement of layer birds in Tamil Nadu.

 The NECC office in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, co-ordinates in fixing the price of egg and tracks production for entire Tamil Nadu except Chennai, South Arcot and North Arcot districts.
