For Assembly candidates in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, it will be legal to spend up to Rs 10 lakh on the election, a hike of 67 per cent from Rs 6 lakh earlier.

For a Lok Sabha election, a candidate will now be permitted to spend Rs 25 lakh compared with Rs 15 lakh earlier.

The ceiling for election expenses for candidates contesting Delhi Assembly polls would go up from Rs 5 to Rs 9 lakh while that for Mizoram would be raised from Rs 3 to Rs 5 lakh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters here today after the Cabinet meeting.

The government seems to have realised the impracticality of small budgets for election spending, fixed last in 1997.
