Engineers' role lauded

P Tamilvanan, chairman, New Mangalore Port stressed the need for co-ordination between various engineering disciplines for a glorious India.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Engineer's Day Celebrations organised by the officers' association of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited here.

It is because of technological advances that the per capita income of an Indian today is Rs 11,684 when in 1985 it was only Rs 3,607, he said.

"We have sophisticated knowledge. Marketing is required to deliver the best. We have to keep abreast of developments for which engineering is essential," he said.

While India had only five major ports in 1950 it has 12 major ports now and all ports are increasing capacity, he said and added that Sir Visvesvarya whose birthday is being celebrated as Engineers' Day was a man of commitment with technological skill and thinking.
