Steel Authority Of India (SAIL) today said its efforts towards environment protection have yielded success for achieving sustainable development.
The company officials claimed that air emissions have been reduced to 1.12 kg per tonne of crude steel in financial year 2010-11, a reduction of 55 per cent.
In addition, specific effluent discharge level of 2.5 meter cub per tonne of finished steel has been achieved, a reduction of 16 percent, while continued thrust on solid waste management has led to an improvement of over 16%, the official said.
SAIL has progressively introduced ISO 14001 certification at all the steel units and mines, resulting in improvement in waste management, water and energy conservation, noise reduction, control of stack and fugitive emissions, improved house keeping, improved work, zone environment, sources said.
