A senior official associated with the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has come under the scanner for allegedly paying donations to the Naxalites.

"The crime investigation department of the state police has been asked to conduct the probe into the alleged donations paid by the PMGSY official to the Naxalites in Bastar," Chhattisgarh Minister for Home Nankiram Kanwar said in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly today.

The Minister, in his written reply to a question raised by senior Congress member Dharamjeet Singh, said that the CID had started the probe and the investigation into the matter was in progress. The report was however awaited, the minister said.

The officer under the scanner is of Executive Engineer (EE) rank posted in Bastar and has been supervising the PMGSY projects in the insurgency-hit Bastar region. Following Naxal threats, the construction work of a large number of roads had been stranded in the pockets where the rebels have their sway.

According to officials, none of the projects under the ambitious PMGSY could be completed in Dantewada and Bijapur districts, both worst-Naxal infested districts, following rebels, interference. Even the Border Road Organisation (BRO) had failed to complete a project in the region.
