India today restored the wheat export ban that was lifted earlier this month.
On July 3, a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) permitted export of 900,000 tonnes of grain by government-owned trading agencies.
DGFT today withdrew its earlier notification. According to sources, the decision has been taken keeping in view the expected poor performance this kharif season on inadequate rains.
The ban was imposed in February 2007 as the government wheat procurement had declined and the country had to rely on costly imports.
However, notification regarding export of 650,000 tonnes of wheat products like wheat flour and maida issued on July 3 is valid.
