Exports from Tirupur crosses Rs 20,000 cr

Exporters targets Rs 36,000 cr in two years

Exports from the knitwear hub of Tirupur reported Rs 20,730 crore in 2014–15 compared with Rs 18,000 crore in 2013-14, registering a growth rate of 15.5 per cent in terms of rupee and 15.9 per cent in terms of foreign currencies.

The export figure was arrived at after consolidating the knitwear exports data collected from 38 banks located in and around Tirupur.

Tirupur Exporters Association president A Sakthivel said they had expected the exports to be Rs 21,000 crore during 2013-14.

He said after reaching Rs 18,000 crore in 2013–14, they had set a target to double this to Rs 36,000 crore by 2016-17.

He hoped FTA with European Union and Canada would materialise in the near future, and also said they were expecting three per cent interest subvention to the knitwear garment sector to boost exports.
