The MP government has decided to offer a power subsidy of Rs 510 crore. Farmers will get a lion's share of it of Rs 485 crore. Among others, powerloom workers will also get power at subsidised rates.

There are approximately 7 million farmers and 33,000 powerlooms that feed India's one of the oldest textile towns, Burhanpur. The state government is also learnt to have reduce entry tax on raw cotton for powerloom units from 2 per cent to 1 per cent, though officials have not confirmed it.

The power supplied for agriculture purpose will be charged at Rs 1.70 per unit against the existing Rs 2.50 per unit and prior to that Rs 2.65 per unit fixed by MP Electricity Regulatory commission.

Thus, the effective benefit passed to the farmer is 80 paise per unit. "A temporary connections for similar purpose will be available at Rs 2.20 per unit," said a spokesperson.

The powerloom units will get power at Rs 2 per unit up to 60 HP consumption per month against the earlier Rs 3.30 per unit plus 15 per cent load factor for minimum charges. "Now power will be available at Rs 2 per unit to them, this would put Rs 6.56 crore additional burden on the state government," said the spokesperson.

Similarly, the power tariff had been slashed for consumption of up to first 300 units the metered and unlettered agriculture consumers at Rs. 1.20 per unit, while domestic category consumers will have to pay Rs 1.75 per unit up to a consumption of 30 units against existing Rs. 2.65 per unit that was effective since April 1, 2006. Mr chouhan's government has reduced the power bills for tension street light schemes of Gram Panchayats electricity.

"The power will be available at Rs 45 kw per month instead of existing Rs 120 kw per month for Gram Panchayat areas, while under low tension street light scheme of Nagar Panchayats the power will be available at Rs 85 kw per month against the existing Rs 120 kw per month. The cabinet also decided to exempt the low-tension irrigation consumers from payment of annual minimum charges," said the spokesperson.
