Industry body Ficci today submitted a three-point agenda to the government for building national capability in the field of project management including setting up a three-tier Project Management Office (PMO) structure for the country.

Besides, Ficci has also called for institutionalising a national Project Management Maturity framework and making project management training mandatory for personnel deployed on large projects.

An approach paper in this regard was released at a conference on 'Developing Policy Framework for Effective Adoption of Project Management in India' held here today.

"The approach paper to the government further highlighted that whilst the setting up of PMOs will provide a much-needed structure, specific actions are also needed to incubate and proliferate best practices," Ficci said in a statement.

The chamber also asked the government to develop and maintain a framework on the basis of which national awards and maturity level certifications can be introduced to recognise high performing organisations.

Speaking during the event, Chief Statistician of India TCA Anant said the government is looking forward to creating a partnership with industry associations and consultancy outfits to provide training in project management, especially for sectors like transport, health and power.

He said currently more than 550 major projects, with an individual investments of Rs 150 crore, are being implemented across key sectors and there is an urgent need for capacity building of project management skills.
