The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) is planning to undertake a pan-India skill mapping project to counter the problem of workforce migration and unemployment. The proposal envisages identifying region-specific industrial clusters in the country and advising the state governments to set up training institutes accordingly.
After the study is completed, the industry body will suggest the state governments to set up Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) imparting specialisation skills in sync with local demand, facilitating ready absorption in the local clusters. The body has also received assurances of co-operation from some state governments and entered has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West Bengal government.
On her recent visit to the city, Ficci deputy director Rekha Kaul said that the presently-run training courses by the state and central governments failed to identify the pulse of market demand, which resulted in poor placement records and the students were forced to migrate to other industrial centers in search of jobs.
“We are in talks with a number of local industrial organisations of the country to identify the glitches in renovation of course curriculums at the training centres. If the need arises, we will also recommend commencement of new courses to meet the industry’s ever changing requirements,” she added.
The examinations for these new courses will also be conducted by Ficci, while the results will be declared by the local industrial bodies and the certification be issued by the labour ministry. Ficci director (Labour Employment and Skill Development), B P Pant said the local industrial bodies would be entrusted with the task of training the unskilled manpower according to their needs.
