Fiscal Deficit Slips To 5.9% Of Gdp

A huge shortfall of Rs 9,691 crore in the total revenue receipts in 2001-02 pushed the fiscal deficit to 5.9 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) compared to the revised target of 5.7 per cent. The budget estimate of fiscal deficit for the last financial year was 4.7 per cent of GDP.

According to the final figures released by the Controller General of Accounts today, the fiscal deficit at Rs 1,36,211 crore was higher by almost Rs 4,500 crore compared to the revised estimates. The Plan expenditure too was marginally higher at Rs 1,00,245 crores as compared to the revised estimate of Rs 99,154 crores.
