Finance Minister P Chidambaram called on Rahul Gandhi, the newly-appointed general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), to brief him on the stock market.

The finance minister reportedly explained how the markets work to the 37-year-old general secretary who was appointed to the position last month.

Confirming the visit, a member of Gandhi's staff said: "The finance minister met him at a time when the Sensex was fluctuating widely. What do you think they would have discussed?"

Chidambaram's visit is part of an exercise that Gandhi has undertaken to learn the finer points of policy-making. To this end, he has been meeting ministers ever since he took on the party assignment.

"The first person he called on was Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, and then Home Minister Shivraj Patil," said an aide.
