The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has been awarded the National Resource Centre status. FSL will now help educational institutions like Bangalore University, Nirma University and Gujarat University prepare curriculum related to the subject.

The Gandhinagar-based FSL will also provide the know-how to other states willing to put up such a laboratory. The Maharashtra government has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with FSL for setting up a similar laboratory.

"The Centre has given the status to FSL," minister of state for home Amit Shah told Business Standard. The FSL designs degree and diploma level courses for universities.

The government has, so far, spent over Rs 30 crore on FSL, which has dealt with some of the most high-profile criminal cases. "The laboratory has also been instrumental in dealing with training sessions, where police and army officials participate," said a senior official of FSL.

Recently, 21 police officials from Nepal had come for a training programme. So far, nearly 100 officials had undergone training programmes here.

Among some of the most high-profile cases to have been referred to FSL are the Telgi scam, Madhumita Shukla murder case, Nithari case, and the Parliament attack case.
